Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said on Saturday that the founder of the Cherubim & Seraphim Church, St. Moses Orimolade Tunolase and other Nigerians who had contributed to Christianity deserved to be celebrated.
He said Nigerians, especially Christians, must never forget those who brought and spread Christianity in Nigeria, saying it was by their efforts that Christians in the country now enjoy the benefits of salvation.
Speaking as the Chief Guest of Honour at the dedication of the St Moses Orimolade Holy Land, the Cenotaph of Cherubim and Seraphim Church founder at Ojokoro, Lagos, Obasanjo also stated that the current situation did not indicate that Nigerians were preparing for the kingdom of God to reign supreme in the land.
The building was built and donated to the church by Rev Esther Ajayi. It has four sections; the cenotaph, secretariat, church auditorium and The Eternal Bible College.
The former President, who took the first Bible reading; I Kings 8: 1-11, later said, “Christianity did not originate from our land. It was brought to us, but when it was brought to us, many of our people have made tremendous contributions to Christianity and they have become unsung heroes.
“I want to commend and thank God for the effort of those who thought of this (edifice) and God helped them to make it happen. We are now singing songs of our past heroes and it is worth it, because yes the missionaries came, we have our own missionaries and leaders who created and made the church to spread in our land, and Moses Orimolade was definitely one of them.
“It is because of the establishment of the Church of Christ that you and I have the assurance of life and salvation, and we must never forget those missioners and church leaders who played their part as well so that you and I can enjoy the benefits of salvation given to us only by God almighty.”
The anchor of the event pointed out that it took Obasanjo’s intervention as President for the tomb (of St. Orimolade) not to have been destroyed during the construction of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
In his remarks, the former president, who made reference to Psalm 24: 7-9, said he didn’t realise that the decision he made at the time would make the event possible years after.
“If I had insisted and the contractor also insisted that we should not bend the road, that tomb would have been removed and the body exhumed and this splendid edifice wouldn’t have been, and if it would arise at all, it would not be here.”
Speaking on the state of the nation, Obasanjo said, “The situation we have now, particularly in this country, does not indicate that we are preparing for the kingdom of God to reign supreme in our land, but if we do what we should do, God would make His kingdom to reign supreme in our lives. That is my prayer for each and every one of us.”
The sermon was delivered by Rev Ademuyiwa Ajayi, and interpreted by his wife and donor of the building, Esther. The preacher, who titled his teaching ‘Come and see’, advised the people to use their resources for God. “I used to think my wife wasn’t okay with the way she used to give to God, but now the reward has been evident to all and the more she spent for God the more the reward,” the preacher said.
Also present at the event were the representatives of the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Gbolahan Lawal; and the Elegushi of Ikateland, Oba Saheed Elegushi; clerics, traditional rulers, faithful and well-wishers.
The church said the building would be renamed as the
international headquarters of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and
Seraphim, where correspondences are to be received, noting that it wouldn’t
affect the constitutionally recognised general headquarters at Ebute-Metta.
